What is Web Hosting?

What is a domain name?
A domain name is your own unique address which visitors use to find your website. A typical domain
name would be www.yourcompanyname.com Domain names can also replace the ".com" with ".co.uk",
".net", ".org" or many other alternatives depending on the origin and purpose of the website.
What is storage space and bandwidth?
Storage space refers to how many and what size of files your website can hold on the server. This is
usually measured in MB or GB. 1 GB is approximately 1000 MB. Bandwidth measures how much data you
can transfer to the visitors of your website. If 10 visitors each download a 1MB file you will use 10MB
of bandwidth.
What is HTML?
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is how most websites are built. The web server
sends HTML to your visitor's computer and a web browser translates the HTML and displays the web
page.
What do I need to do to put Flash on my website?
Nothing. Flash is a client-side technology which means that your visitors need to have flash installed on
their computers but you do not need anything special on your server.
What are PHP, ASP, perl, etc?
These are server-side scripting languages which allow your website to perform much more complex
tasks than a standard HTML website.
How do I track how many hits my website gets?
There are various options for tracking visitors to a website with the most popular being google analytics.

Do I have to change my domain if I get a new host?
No. You can move a domain to a new server whenever you like. This means you can bring your existing
domain to our servers and you can take you domain with you should you decide to leave us.
Will there be forced advertising on my site - things like banner ads or popup ads?
No. The only content on your website will be what you put on it.
